EYE EXAMINATIONS
Dr. Eldridge has performed over 100,000 comprehensive eye examinations and conducted nearly 200,000 patient examinations. Comprehensive eye examinations require one to two hours, so please allow ample time. The average is one hour fifteen minutes to one hour thirty minutes. You should bring your glasses, current medication list and any insurance cards. Please try to arrive 15 minutes early so you can complete the patient registration form. VIDEO
Usually eye drops are used to dilate your pupils. These drops may cause blurred vision and sensitivity to light for up to several hours. When available, we give our patients reversing drops that help shorten the time required for the dilating drops to wear off. We recommend that you bring one or two pair of sunglasses, and if possible a companion to drive you home after the dilated examination. Disposable sunglasses are available if you should forget yours.
Follow-up examinations usually require about thirty minutes to one hour. Please allow time!
We make every effort to honor all time commitments. We attempt to leave a number of openings available during the day to accommodate the anticipated emergency cases that will arise. In spite of these arrangements, there invariably seem to be prolonged and difficult cases, unexpected emergencies, and surgery emergencies that interfere with our ability to honor your specific appointment time. The frequent use of dilating drops also produces an unpredictable period of waiting time.
We firmly believe in the value of your time and very much dislike long waiting periods in the office. We apologize in advance for any inconvenience. If time is critical to your schedule on a particular day, please let us know when making your appointment or on your arrival to the office.
Diagnostic procedures performed in our office include film and digital fundus photography, digital and film fluorescein angiography, Zeiss Cirrus HD-OCT imaging, corneal pachymetry, and Zeiss Humphrey visual field analysis. We have the same instruments for glaucoma diagnosis and management as the renowned Eye Institute of the Medical College of Wisconsin.
GLASSES AND CONTACT LENSES
We usually perform a refraction (glasses test) as part of our complete medical examination of your eyes. If glasses are necessary, we will give you a prescription to take to the optical shop of your choice. We do not sell glasses in our office. We do not have any financial interest in any optical supplier.
If you are interested in contact lenses, a return appointment for a contact lens fitting can be scheduled with Dr. Eldridge. A wide variety of contact lenses are available, including the latest in rigid gas-permeable, tinted, monovision, multifocal, soft lenses to correct astigmatism, and flexible wear lenses. We are fond of 1-Day Acuvue lenses. For existing contact lens wearers, we will not reorder lenses, write a prescription for lenses, or authorize a prescription renewal for lenses if you have not had a comprehensive eye examination within the past twelve months.
